Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA)

Is a not-for-profit organisation of Australian medical professionals and students who are dedicated to promoting health and wellbeing through care of the planet. DEA’s vision, ‘Healthy Planet, Healthy People’ underpins the core values and objectives that are shared among its members, and guides us in our contribution to public education, environmental advocacy, and policy development. DEA aims to use scientific evidence to alert and educate members of the public, communities, governments and colleagues on the relationship between our health and the health of our environment, including the quality of our air and water, the diversity of our ecosystems and the stability of our climate.

iDEA

Is DEA’s annual conference, which brings together hundreds of medical professionals and students across Australia who share an interest in planetary health, the impact of climate change on health, and sustainable healthcare.

The theme of iDEA 2022 is Time to Act.
From September 2 to 4, delegates will come together both in the heart of Melbourne and virtually to listen to, learn from and collaborate with a range of experts in climate change and health. This conference will encourage discussions about the world’s biggest health issues and bring together the minds of hundreds of experts to discuss the influence on human health and how to address these issues.
Anyone is welcome to join!

When will the program be released?

The conference program can be found on our website – stay tuned for more speakers coming soon! Note there may be changes to the program due to speaker availability.

Where will iDEA be held and how do I get there?

The workshops on Friday 2 September will be held at the DEA Headquarters in 60L Green Building, 60 Leicester Street, Carlton. The main program will be held in the B117 Lecture Theatre, in the Glyn Davis Building (MSD), The University of Melbourne, Parkville. Both venues are easily accessible via public transport. Further details on getting to the venues will be provided in the Delegate Handbook released closer to the date.

What should I bring?

If you are joining us in-person, all you will need to bring is a copy of your ticket confirmation (digital or printed) and reusable hot beverage cup and/or water bottle.

Can I attend iDEA virtually?

Yes – for delegates who are not planning to attend in person, we will have a Zoom livestream available for those who purchase virtual tickets.

Can I still come to iDEA if I’m not a doctor or medical student?

We welcome anyone who is interested in or wants to learn more about climate change, planetary health, biodiversity, and sustainable healthcare to come along to iDEA!

Can I still come to iDEA if I’m not a DEA member?

Non-DEA members are welcome to attend. Please note that tickets are cheaper for DEA members so if you are a medical doctor or student, we suggest you join DEA before purchasing your ticket. If you are a medical student, it is also free to join DEA!

What does my iDEA in-person ticket include?

Along with entry into our academic program, your ticket will include delicious and authentic Lebanese morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea generously catered by Atiyah, Australia’s first off-grid and zero-carbon kitchen. All food will be plant-based and made with fresh, local, premium produce in keeping with iDEA and Atiyah’s sustainability ethos, and organic waste will be diverted to nutrient-rich compost. Tickets also automatically include the cost to carbon offset related travel and venue emissions.

I’ve changed my mind and want to change my ticket to virtual/in-person. Is this possible?

If you would like to upgrade your virtual ticket to an in-person ticket (or vice versa) please email idea@dea.org.au by two weeks prior to iDEA (19th August) and this can be arranged.

What is the Saturday night social event?

We are hosting an exciting cocktail night at South of Johnston (Collingwood) that is not to be missed! Guests who have not registered for the main conference are welcome to come along, and will simply need to purchase a social event ticket. Keep your eye out on our website and social media for further updates on the event.

When does registration close?

We encourage all potential delegates to buy their tickets as early as possible to ensure your spot and catered food can be secured. For this reason, in-person tickets will need to close 2 weeks prior to iDEA. However, virtual tickets will remain open until the event for anyone who is able to join on short notice.

I would love to come to iDEA but the price is a barrier for me

We want to allow the opportunity for anyone who wants to come to iDEA be able to do so. If you have any concerns about prices for iDEA, please don’t hesitate to get in touch by emailing idea@dea.org.au. We have subsidies on offer for student delegates.

I’m from interstate and would love to come to iDEA, but am concerned about the carbon emissions from flying

iDEA is aware of the need to reduce carbon emissions, and for this reason, we are consciously working on making the conference as sustainable as possible through including locally sourced plant-based menus, using a zero waste approach to food waste, and carbon offsetting. The option to attend iDEA virtually is also available.

What are your accommodation options for travelling delegates?

Interstate or rural/regional DEA member delegates have the option to billet at a local Vic DEA member’s home for the duration of iDEA. If you have not indicated this at the time of booking or have a change of mind, please email idea@dea.org.au. We will endeavour to billet as many delegates as possible, but in the case of high demand this will be on a first-come first-served basis. We are also exploring discounted accommodation options for delegates – updates on this will be announced on our website and social media.

What are your COVID safety settings?

iDEA will be following the Victorian COVID safety settings and recommendations at the time. We strongly encourage delegates to wear facial masks when not eating or drinking, and will be providing hand sanitiser for use. There will also be space in the auditorium for delegates to social distance.

What is your policy for ticket cancellations?

All cancellations or alterations should be put in writing to idea@dea.org.au by 18 July. If you have purchased a 2-day or 1-day ticket and can no longer attend in-person due to COVID-19 or other reasons, we can provide an equivalent virtual ticket and reimburse the difference in cost.

What will happen if iDEA cannot be held in person due to COVID restrictions?

While we anticipate this should hopefully not happen, all associated components of in-person attendance such as social events and workshops will be cancelled and amounts refunded in full. The academic program will be made virtual and delegates who registered for an in-person ticket will be reimbursed the difference for a virtual ticket.

Will iDEA be recorded for viewing afterwards?

Recordings will be available (when it is possible to record) to all delegates who have purchased an in-person or virtual ticket for a short period of time after the conference

Can my company sponsor iDEA or receive a media pass to iDEA?

If your company is interested in the above we’d love to hear from you! Please email idea@dea.org.au to get in touch.

COVIDsafe Plan

As we continue to deal with a worldwide pandemic, iDEA will be following the Victorian COVID safety settings and recommendations. We ask that all delegates bring their own face masks, and strongly encourage these to be worn during the event when not eating or drinking. Hand sanitiser will also be available for use, and there will be space in the auditorium for delegates to socially distance as well as outdoors areas during meal breaks.

We understand the uncertainty regarding travel interstate and COVID infection, and also ask that delegates who develop any symptoms to please get tested and isolate. For delegates who have purchased an in-person ticket but are no longer able to attend in person, we are offering the following options:

1. Converting your ticket into an virtual ticket and
    a) be refunded the difference
    b) can choose to make a tax-deductible donation of the difference between the tickets.
2. Refund the full amount.
3. If no longer able to attend at all, you may choose to donate your ticket cost as a tax-deductible donation.
